FileCure Review

The newest product in ParetoLogic's line of PC maintenance and security software tools is FileCure (main site | download), a file extension repair tool. FileCure enables users to easily open certain files or at least identify and download a program that will allow them to be opened.

Do you often get files in your email that have mysterious extensions such as .ppt, .tgz, .tiff? Do you double click on these files and nothing happens? The problem lies either in a broken file association or the lack of a necessary program.

FileCure is ParetoLogic's answer to the problem. FileCure is an easy to use tool that makes it easy for people to fix file extensions and associations, change file associations, identify types of files, and find programs that might be necessary to open certain files.

The Program FileCure Review

FileCure is available as a small, quick download. After installation a window pops up with several options.

The first option is a scan of your system, which will locate "orphaned" file extensions and either fix their association or provide you with an option to download software in order to be able to open them. For example, I had a .sit file somewhere on my computer and FileCure identified it as a file compressed with Smith Micro Stuffit. I had the option of downloading Stuffit Expander. See below:

The Manage option allows you to individually change the associations for certain file extensions. For example, if you'd rather have your .doc Word files open in Open Office or another word processor instead you can use this feature to change it permanently in your computer. This is a very easy to use feature and anyone should be able to take advantage of it.

There is the option to schedule scans of your file associations, which isn't really necessary in my opinion but it doesn't hurt. The monitor feature claims to keep track of any file association changes that occur and allows you to revert them back or keep them. If you’ve ever downloaded a new media player, you know they try to change all your file associations. FileCure gives users a way to instantly revert their file associations to their preferred programs.
