How Do I Back Up My Computer? Backups Are Easy And Incredibly Important
How Do I Back Up My Computer?
By H. Gordon
Making regularly scheduled backups of the data on your computer is a very important habit to get into. Relatively speaking, the cost of backing up your data is miniscule compared to the cost of recovering data from a broken hard drive. It's even more miniscule compared to the value of important data that can never be replaced in the event of a hardware failure.
These days many people store important and often priceless data on their computers - family photos, music, tax information, research, novels and writing, and more. Are you prepared in case you have hardware failure?
Backing Up Your Computer Is Easy How Do I Back Up My Computer?
The best and safest way to back up your computer is to get yourself a separate hard drive to store your backups on. Hard drives are not infallible and they can and do break. Over the course of my computing life I've had 3 hard drives break on me. They do not last forever. If your hard drive breaks, and you were backing up your data to a separate sector or partition on that same drive, you're up the proverbial creek!
External data storage is not that expensive these days. Do yourself a favor and invest in an external hard drive.
I have used Western Digital My Book external hard drives and I really like them.
Computer Back Up Software How Do I Back Up My Computer?
We highly recommend using Acronis True Image Home 2010 (main website | download) for all your backup needs. This software is incredibly flexible and robust. In fact, after my laptop hard drive suddenly died a very noisy death I was able to completely restore all the lost information using a backup I had made with my Acronis software.
Simply connect your external hard drive, run Acronis, and the rest is very straightforward and easy. Acronis software is extremely user friendly, and their scheduling feature ensures that you do not miss backing up your computer due to laziness or forgetfulness.
Different Backups For Different Situations How Do I Back Up My Computer?
I highly recommend making backups of your entire hard drive on a weekly basis, and perhaps in addition make daily backups of the My Documents folder. This is all very possible with Acronis' software scheduler.
This is a great solution in case you accidentally delete a folder or document and don't want to re-image your entire hard drive. It's also useful to have timely backups of all your documents.
Break It Down How Do I Back Up My Computer?
Let's break it down into some easy to follow steps:
#1) Get an external hard drive. It should be big enough to store 2 versions of your entire hard drive and a backup of your My Documents folder. 1 or 2 Terrabytes (TB) should be sufficient. If you need more you probably know already.
#2) Get yourself a robust and easy to use backup software tool. We like Acronis True Image Home.
#3) Plug in the USB hard drive (read any installation instructions that came with the drive you purchased)
#4) Run your backup software and ensure that all backups are stored on the external hard drive.
#5) Make sure you create a backup schedule in whatever software program you have chosen. Make a weekly hard drive image (or daily if you make lots of changes often) and a daily backup of your My Documents and other personal folders.

I hate to sound like a salesperson here, but I recommend Acronis simply because it really saved my butt! I had JUST done a complete hard drive backup before my laptop hard drive died. Talk about luck! I was able to get a brand new hard drive and restore all my data. I didn't lose anything and instead of buying a brand new computer I only had to spend $150 on a new hard drive.
