Depending on what browser you use, you'll have to do a couple different steps.
In Internet Explorer (version 8), go to Tools > Delete Browsing History. There is a list of options available so that you can save data from favorite websites for example. Read all the options and select the extent that you want to delete the history and temporary internet files.
Internet Explorer now has an "in private" browsing feature where the browser will store nothing: no cookies, history, or temporary internet files. To start a private browsing session you can go to Tools > In Private Browsing or press CTRL SHIFT P.
In FireFox (version 3.6.x), go to Tools > Clear Recent History. Depending on how much you want to clear, you can select anywhere from the last hour to everything. This is very easy. To stop FireFox from remembering history files you can choose to have it clear the history every time you close the browser. Simply go to Tools > Options > Privacy, and choose "Clear History When Firefox Closes". You can also deselect "Remember My Browsing History" so that FireFox will not remember anything.
If you want FireFox to remember most sites you visit but occasionally want to browse where nothing will be kept, you can start a private browsing session by pressing CTRL SHIFT P or selecting Tools > Start Private Browsing. This will open a new session where FireFox will not remember anything nor store any cookies.
